Boosting water security: Kenya-Korea partnership to benefit ASALs region
Leveraging Korea's proficiency in efficient water resource management, irrigation, and desalination technologies can significantly contribute to ensuring water security for both agriculture and domestic use.
The Ministry of ASALs and East African Community strengthened its ties with the Republic of Korea today to address water scarcity in the ASALs region.
The Cabinet Secretary for ASALs and East African Cooperation, Penina Malonza, engaged in discussions with Mr. Eom Ikhyun, the Managing Director of the Korea Trade Center in Nairobi and Resident Representative for Commercial Affairs at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Kenya. During the meeting, she announced addressing water scarcity in ASALs areas as a priority area of cooperation.

"Leveraging Korea's proficiency in efficient water resource management, irrigation, and desalination technologies can significantly contribute to ensuring water security for both agriculture and domestic use," said the CS. She added that other areas of collaboration extend to capacity building, sharing knowledge, and technology that support building climate resilience for vulnerable trans-boundary communities.
The CS expressed hope for mutual cooperation that will help the ministry achieve its developmental goals with the expertise of Korea.
She also appreciated the robust and developmental benefits achieved through the diplomatic ties between Kenya and Korea.
The Cabinet Secretary, accompanied by the Principal Secretary for East Africa Community, Abdi Dubat, highlighted enhancing the capacities of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises on Simplified Trade Regime (STR) along the borders with the East African Community. Mrs. Malonza noted that this could be achieved through partnerships and the improvement of multimodal transport to support the growth of emerging industries within the East African Community.
